A magnificent example of a Victorian gold locket, circa 1860. It centers upon a dramatic buckle, accented with three old mine-cut diamonds, and is hinged to open to reveal two photograph compartments. 

The 18K gold pendant looks like a much richer karat gold through a chemical process called blooming. It involved dipping a gold item into a boiling acid bath which burned off any alloys on the surface. This technique of alloy deletion leaves a thin layer of pure gold surface on a piece, with a gorgeous, soft satin finish. 

This technique has since fallen out of use because the fumes released from the process are extremely toxic.
